Detailed Network Measurements Using Sparse Graph Counters: The Theory

چکیده
Measuring network flow sizes is important for tasks like accounting/billing, network forensics and security. Per-flow accounting is considered hard because it requires that many counters be updated at a very high speed; however, the large fast memories needed for storing the counters are prohibitively expensive. Therefore, current approaches aim to obtain approximate flow counts; that is, to detect large elephant flows and then measure their sizes. Recently the authors and their collaborators have developed [1] a novel method for per-flow traffic measurement that is fast, highly memory efficient and accurate. At the core of this method is a novel counter architecture called “counter braids.” In this paper, we analyze the performance of the counter braid architecture under a Maximum Likelihood (ML) flow size estimation algorithm and show that it is optimal; that is, the number of bits needed to store the size of a flow matches the entropy lower bound. While the ML algorithm is optimal, it is too complex to implement. In [1] we have developed an easy-to-implement and efficient message passing algorithm for estimating flow sizes that is analyzed elsewhere.

Analysis of the enzyme network involved in cattle milk production using graph theory
Understanding cattle metabolism and its relationship with milk products is important in bovine breeding. A systemic view could lead to consequences that will result in a better understanding of existing concepts. Topological indices and quantitative characterizations mostly result from the application of graph theory on biological data. In the present work, the enzyme network involved in cattle...
متن کاملSpectral identification of networks using sparse measurements
We propose a new method to recover global information about a network of interconnected dynamical systems based on observations made at a small number (possibly one) of its nodes. In contrast to classical identification of full graph topology, we focus on the identification of the spectral graph-theoretic properties of the network, a framework that we call spectral network identification. The m...

A new method to quantify, monitore and assess ecological structures and functions is the application of graph theory. In ecology, this theory demonstrates its suitable application in assessment of ecological connectivity. Connectivity is the structural attribute of landscape which facilitates the species movement among their habitats. Using graph theory, this paper aims to assess the connectivi...
متن کاملFace Recognition using an Affine Sparse Coding approach
Sparse coding is an unsupervised method which learns a set of over-complete bases to represent data such as image and video. Sparse coding has increasing attraction for image classification applications in recent years. But in the cases where we have some similar images from different classes, such as face recognition applications, different images may be classified into the same class, and hen...
متن کاملA complex network approach to robustness and vulnerability of spatially organized water distribution networks
In this work, water distribution systems are regarded as large sparse planar graphs with complex network characteristics and the relationship between important topological features of the network (i.e. structural robustness and loop redundancy) and system resilience, viewed as the antonym to structural vulnerability, are assessed. Deterministic techniques from complex networks and spectral grap...
